Pierpaolo Leo works across disciplines as a solo performer, installation artist and supplier of concrete sounds for avant rock group Les Enfants Rouges. Unclocked can be more comfortably described as electronica than sound art. On a series of short tracks, Leo puts synth sounds through the plug-in mangler and watches the results emerge as iridescent ribbons.
His work is also informed by an interest in unstable systems, particularly with regard to rhythm.
Comparisons might be drawn with Ligeti's use of parallel metres or 0's (zero's) minimal pulse experiments, but Leo's work is far busier and more texturally lush. "Between Two Points" is a beautiful demonstration of his techniques in action, sounding like pendulums slowly coming to rest over glowing embers.
He even dares to summon forth the Prog demon on "Campo Elettrico", with its chopped up, diminished chords, and "Mechanical Beauty", which sounds like Leo has sampled the cosmic drones from Yes's "Close To The Edge".
