Like many young artists looking to get their share of experience, Killdeer began her musical career
collaborating with artists who had been around long enough to know a helpful thing or two about the industry.
Basement Jaxx, Bang Gang, and Nouvelle Vague were a few of these names, with the latter providing a
surreal experience for the young Killdeer. After contributing to Nouvelle Vague's second album, Bande à
Part, she participated in their world tour lasting 3 years. Knowing Nouvelle Vague's leading man, Marc Collin,
also helped out to a large extent in the long run; he went on to produce Killdeer's solo debut, 'Weather's
coming.' and is today backing the forthcoming album 'Innerquake' produced by Matt Verta Ray (Heavy Trash).
The new album is the outcome of 2 years of live performances. The energy and sound that was created by Phoebe Killdeer and the Short Straws on stage became contagious, it needed to be explored and recorded.
A little more about the band…
Phoebe's singing style is rooted in blues, she's a storyteller, in a vein of such acts like Tom Waits or Nick Cave. Her voice comes from the gut, the womb, she's expressive without any of those dreadful affected postures. She draws a thin line between her soul and the heart of the listener, because she's also a brilliant and rare performer whose eyes leave a sting of vibrant energy, deep under the skin.
She met a band as sensitive as herself :The Short Straws. A bunch of self taught musicians, their engine fed by the same unique emotional fuel. They all come from different genres (thus they cover a large panel of popular rock and roll culture), and their obsession for the search of "THE SOUND" led them to refine together their own coherent style, Phoebe's strong influential input.
Raunchy guitars sometimes reminiscent of 80's australian rock, southern soul, or 70's fat leads are erupted by Cedric. He has built up his own dirty signature trademark, with lot's of feedback, but with a sensual approach, refining it through years of experimenting. His playing sounds a bit odd and clumsy sometimes before a blast of fuzz hits your plexus right in the chorus.
Raphael is probably one of the most inventive and gifted drummers around. His incongruous percussive style, his sick and incredibly creative grooves bring to the band a wide rhythmic dimension. .He does not share the same obsession with "the vintage " as his fellow partners, therefore he is able to bring a more modern feel to the sound of the band.
Alexandre is a kind of beast, capable of full frontal fat and sleazy grooves, but is also able to caress our ears with those early 70's melodic and almost erotic basslines. His feet anchored deep in the ground, his bass neck pointed at the audience, the sweat runs down his chest as he wears a furious grin reminding us that not everything is completely ok.
Now in 2011, after a year hiatus and shows hitting the many corners of the globe Phoebe Killdeer & The
Short Straws are back with their 2nd album 'Innerquake', due out in September, which will rock you away especially when experiencing it live. You might hear hints of Noise Rock from Chicago : straightforward, pounding inventive drumming, white noise, feedback, unpolished sound, David Lynch's disturbing climatic atmosphere, The bad seeds, beasts of bourbon and birthday party's raw, storytelling, edgy, dirty, blues and hints of industrial noise reverb guitar, some jungle exotica 50's rhythmic tribalism and 60's southern soul with bursts of fuzz and a splash of catchy backing vocals. Expect a show that will make you howl on a full moon night while kicking back a whiskey or two…
Killdeer and her band of Straws will make you dance then fly away leaving you wanting more and more and
more.
