The revolution has begun! The rebirth of lyricism is here! A lot of players can make words rhyme, but it takes more than that to be a true lyrical artist. True artists are born, not made. Their talent is evident in the stroke of a brush, the sound of an instrument, orif youre talking about Phase Onethe flow of a consummate wordsmith.

Ricardo Isaac, a.k.a. Phase One, found that flow as a young man growing up in one of the epicenters of rapThe Bronx. And with that flow came a message. For him, it wasnt just about making words rhyme, it was about what he had to say. And when you put the words together with the style, you get pure hip-hop from the soul. Ive been called a conscious rapper by some. I like to think of my rhymes as refreshing, he says.

Driven and confident in his art, Phase One calls himself a man of the people and a man for the people: I have something to say, and I want my music to have a positive effect on those who hear it. One listener called her encounter with Phase Ones lyrical skills a learning experience. His energetic, aggressive style is contagious and makes you think as well as nod your head.

Phase One is no novice to the rap game. The accomplished writer and street poet, (whose debut Hip-Hop, Rap & The Taboo, Life, Music, Soul took the underground rap world by storm) performs regularly and has already developed a wide fan base. He has stimulated and educated crowds up and down the east coast and shared the love and the stage with a number of artists, including Blackstar. He has also performed with hip-hop band Mental Notes and his own hip-hop group, Definitive Moment. Working with a variety of DJs and producers, vibes best with those in the likes of Jay Dee (A Tribe Called Quest, DAngelo, Lucy Pearl, Dwele), Phase One stretches his artistic reach to new heights. His skills may set off a brand of lyricism the hip-hop-loving public is thirsty for.

Phase One loves soul musicold school and newand that love comes through in his music. His influences are many and diverse, and include Common, The Roots, Slum Village, Little Brother, Talib Kweli, and the Platinum Pied Pipers. And just like a true artist, Phase One is destined to leave his mark on the hip-hop world.

Back in the day, when the words were still manifesting themselves in his heart and mind, this lyrical prodigy needed a name, something with meaning. There was an aerosol artist whose tag was Phase 2. He was the master, the Picasso, of his trade. A young colleague suggested Phase One, a name that continued the legacy of artistry and excellence, only this time, in the form of an emcee. You see, Phase One is a name that indicates theres more to what you see, it signifies evolution. Its a name that lets you know theres another level. Keep listening and let him take you to it.
