This is the preternatural myspace music page of Alex Emanuel. PERMISSION (formerly ROLLO) was the most recent name given to his ever changin' project (prior to ROLLO, he was also 1/3 of TRANSIT BELLE, a few years before that there was HYGIENE, LUCAN, THE DINGOS, etc.). The band is presently taking an elongated siesta, but may resume activities in the near future. When that happens, they'll be regrouping and breaking in a new n' improved lineup (Yes, that means PERMISSION, or a new name to be named later, could be looking for a few good members near you). Any and all instruments, ages, genders and nationalities are encouraged to contact their asses at that point in time (but only if)
a) you're cool, w/ sense of humor to boot, y'aint no snob, and you def. aint got no unnatural interest in stealing other people's hard earned work
b) you have no unresolved issues with yourself and friends (like penis envy, latent leanings, "Marcia Marcia Marcia" big brother crap, or festering hairlip hurt, that sorta thang)
c) you've been in bands before and know what being in one truly entails (or, you're passion and enthusiasm is fuckin' true, and you can assure those here at Permission central that you're no fly by night p/t day player mocker type, cuz they'll have none o' that).
Most of the tunes available here for your listening pleasure were recorded over 2 Permissionary sessions @ The Womb in NJ, by the beautiful and talented Ray Ketchem (who's worked with the likes of Luna, the Mendoza Line and Elk City among others). All the PERMISSION music was composed by Alex Emanuel and Ben Jenkins, and all lyrics and arrangements by Alex Emanuel. The lineup on the trax was as follows: Alex Emanuel -gtr, lead vox, keys, Ben Jenkins -lead gtr, Mags LaBombard -bass, keys, David Lewis -drums, Marah Boblin -keys, bg vox, Sir -bg vox (special kudos tendered to Meghan Pickens for putin' up with a whole load of unnecessary shit). The other song offerings here were songs written by Alex Emanuel for previous band incarnations ROLLO and TRANSIT BELLE. As formerly stated, PERMISSION rose out of the smoking ashes of Alex Emanuel's former band ROLLO in 2005, and he and his rolling cohorts have sweetly, sonically and sardonically been navigating the ratio of electric flux density produced by rock in a hard place (NYC) ever since.
" rock n roll that doesnt try to do a billion things all at once and instead focuses on the one simple yet daunting task of capturing an audiences attention. They write nice floating melodies and have some pleasantly surprising hooks. Each song seems to get better than the last which shows a great sense of songwriting" -smother.net
"singer Alex Emanuel has a cocksure blues growl that hits it right on the head." -Ewan Wadharmi, Hybrid Music reviews
"I like the song tow head, it makes me think of the hermes perfume
ads for some reason, sparklers and more cookies. Actually to tell
you the truth, the first thing it reminded me of was the panda scene in
Anchorman! Psychedelic pandas" -Samo
"(The guitar) is joined by Alex Emanuel's vocals-equal parts gutter beg and glamour scoff" - Daniel Janoff/10x10 Magazine, Chicago
"Vocalist/bassist Alex Emanuel's unique, raspy snarl perfectly fits the mood as he moans about perversion and breakdowns ('I'm gonna make my breakdown, Im moving too fast')" -Dave Madden, Splendidezine.com
"Okay, read closely. I can't be absolutely positive, but I'm fairly certain that the lyric 'Ive just not, got the runs' appears (on the track, 'Live Wired'), and if that's the correct lyric, well, excellent, it means Alex Emanuel isn't going to bother with ostentatious rock lyric posturing, and actually say what he means (he) even goes a little Tom Verlaine-esque w/ his lyrics and vocals at times" -Stephanie R. Myers, Motherwest.com/the-deli
"Alex Emanuel's vocals are cool in the style of Bob Pollard, Jeremy Enick, and that dude from the Libertines" -Storylinerecords.com
"Rock with a punk edge. Lots of energy and grit, packed full of attitude. (Alex Emanuel)'s delivery adds to the charm-great choruses with an almost Buck Cherry, Cobain vocal style. Angsty energy drive the songs along without any whine" -Gildthelily
"(lead vocalist Alex Emanuel's declaration) Im in love with getting laid' completes the classic rock sentiment. Jennifer Love Hooker, with its my woman from So Cal yo' chorus, is catchy" -Dave Cobb, Splendidezine.com
"Reminds me of modern day X. New-wave garage rock, boy/girl vocals, sweet basslines, and a certain debauchery feel to it" -Mystery & Misery
"Sonically, you have to sort of twist yourself off-center, adventurous, I found quite a few things to like here. tightrope-walking vocals are a tricky propostion, but Alex (Emanuel) succeeds" -Cake magazine
"Permission c'est l'ulcre. PERMISSION attaque langoureusement le bide la perceuse. Cest si doux! Normal, tout le monde est bourr. La liqueur fait son effet. On danse sur les tables, et on recommande une tourne. PERMISSION: le meilleur groupe de Rock & Roll de 2005"
-DJ NIC (a.k.a Nicolas RICHARD) PERMISSION, Chronique parue dans Le Son de Paris, 2005
