The Perishers
Rising from the ashes of several local bands in the unglamorous surroundings of Basingstoke, Hampshire, The Perishers bonded over a mutual love of sixties pop, loud guitars and acoustic loveliness. Despite building a strong local following, the band realised their music would only grow as their experiences did and relocated to London, eventually settling in Monkees style chaos to live out their Kinks fantasies in the otherwise salubrious surroundings of Muswell Hill. Several years playing the well worn path from The Dublin Castle to The Borderline helped them fine tune there musical chops and attract the attention of several of the music industries A&R men .
With this interest giving them extra impetus, the band entered the studio with Adam Whittaker (Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, Lily Allen, Doves, Starsailor, The Damned, Julian Cope, Hot Club De Paris) to begin sessions for what would be their debut album .
'Hurts Like Hell', released in Sept '04 on Head Records was made up of numerous guerrilla sessions recorded over an 18 month period and incorporated the bands already strong melodies with futuristic production. With the single 'Sunchild' picking up plays from the likes of 6music and BBC London the band had established themselves in the shark infested waters of the music industry.
After successful sales of 'Hurts Like hell' on a very limited promotional budget the band decided to go back to their roots and further explore their love of acoustic guitars and classic pop. Inspired by ex Creation band Arnolds 'Barn Tapes' & Ronnie Lanes 'Anymore For Anymore' the band retired to a field in the Hampshire countryside (once again with Mr Whittaker at the controls) to cut the basic tracks for what was to be an acoustic mini album live in the great outdoors. The Band were so pleased with the resulting recordings that the mini album idea was shelved and plans began to formulate for a new album proper. With follow up sessions in Adams new studio the songs were finished off and two new songs added in keeping with the original idea of a simple no frills approach.
The resulting album 'Teepee' released in Oct 2006 was the bands most complete work to date, combining the finer elements of artists such as The Jayhawks, Teenage Fanclub & Ronnie Lane as well as the bands love of the new breed of song smiths such as Josh Rouse. Well received, the album helped the band expand their already loyal fanbase a well as showcasing a new side to their music.
After the Teepee album, with a mission to produce songs that not only had more depth, but would stand up against the music that made them pick up guitars all those years ago, the band retreated to their London rehearsal room and record collections to begin their next phase. Re-connecting with the sixties pop & psychedelia that they all loved, as well as the bands that first inspired them such as Ride & Teenage Fanclub , the band began to write a new batch of songs, the manifesto being that if they were to record another album then every track had to fulfil each members high standards. Songs were worked on and discarded, and after a 12 month period the band were ready to come out of hibernation and begin demo'ing their new material.
Winter 2008 saw the band returning to the studio with Mr Whittaker to record what has turned out to be their best and most accomplished album to date. Featuring the classic Byrdsian pop of 'Springfield' and 'You'll Never Learn', power pop classics such as 'Spectre' & 'I'll Deny' and the harmony soaked americana of 'All These Years' & 'Cabbage', their third and as yet untitled album is scheduled for release in Autumn 2010.
