BRIDGING WOUNDS: staying the course of uncertainty

September 17 - 19

Northwest Film Forum / 8pm

1515 12th Avenue

Tickets: $12 - 15

In her premiere role as Artistic Director, Paris Hurley (Degenerate Art Ensemble, Kultur Shock) brings together collaborators Ezra Dickinson (Zoe Scofield, The Maureen Whiting Company), Jamie Iacoli (i&m), Tilla Kuenzli (The Maureen Whiting Company), Amanda Moore, and Paurl Walsh (Degenerate Art Ensemble, X-Ray Press) in a visceral multimedia performance.

A girl, an airport, and the things that can happen while waiting frame this in-depth exploration of what it means to be human, highlighting the interconnectivity of nouns and the weight of perception. Original music, movement, animation, and a sculptural audio/visual set encapsulate audience members within a textural world made of post-its, plastic, and string. Shoes are adopted and abandoned. Imaginary kitchens are traversed.

Blurring the lines between co-existing realities, the piece pulls from universally shared experiences and sentiments, inviting participants to step into a world where people are bubbles, bags travel, and unconventional body parts take precedent.

PARIS HURLEY has been playing the violin in a multitude of orchestras, chamber ensembles, and bands for the last 20 years. her wide variety of experience extends from her CARNEGIE HALL debut at the age of fifteen, to her mastery of new music and love of experimentation, making her one of the most sought after violinists of the northwest.

while finishing her degree at CORNISH COLLEGE OF THE ARTS, hurley became a core member of the hyper-experimental performance group, DEGENERATE ART ENSEMBLE. for over two years she worked closely with the ensemble, collaboratively creating multimedia works that ranged from explosive rock club sets to large-scale dance/theater productions, most notably performing at THE MOORE THEATRE, the REDCAT in L.A., and throughout germany.

seamlessly morphing between styles and traditions, hurley has come to be known for her chameleon-like abilities, exquisitely manipulating her strong classical roots to accommodate a plethora of genres. since migrating to seattle in 2003, she has put these skills into action writing, recording and performing with an array of local groups including CIRCUS CONTRAPTION, seattle pianist collective, IMPLIED VIOLENCE, REPTET, THE DEAD SCIENCE, AQUEDUCT, PARENTHETICAL GIRLS, the bike bin project, FIGEATER, LED TO SEA, RIBBONS, the water tower project, trespassers william, JOHANNA KUNIN, and eric miller. this year, she looks forward to two european tours and a record release with balkan rock legends, KULTUR SHOCK, followed by the premiere of her first evening-length multimedia work, BRIDGING WOUNDS.

hurley is managed by THE FRANK AGENCY. established in an effort to open the lines of communication, the frank agency is an innovative arts management organization dedicated to bridging the spaces between artists, presenters, and audience members. by assisting in areas including concert production, grant writing, booking, promotions/publicity, event planning, and the like it is hoped that a higher volume of art can be created and received.
