A brief history. The band was formed in autumn 1995 initially by Zak (Vocals), Thomas (Guitar), Robert (Guitar), Harry (Drums) and Thanos (Bass) as a remedy for teenage boredom. First musical attempts were a combination of the New York Hardcore sound with Emo-Punk at that time, while having a D.I.Y. political attitude. O.B.S.'s rookie concert took place in Villa Amalias Squat (winter 1996), in Athens. Ever since, the band has gone through a lot of changes concerning line-up, musical orientation and political attitude.
Zak and Robert remained as the only founding members of the current line up. Peter joined the band in 2000 as a bass player at first, then switching to drums, his natural position, in 2004. Mike came along in late 2005, playing the bass and saving the day.
Lyrics to the songs express socio-political beliefs and inner emotions influenced by political tendencies such as the International Situationist and truly human experiences like friendship, love, hate, loss and everyday life.
After 12 years of countless live shows, touring, jamming, arguing, recording and experimenting on different genres of music (Hardcore, Alternative Rock, Soul, Punk, R 'n' R) the band decided to dismantle due to personal and musical differences.
Little did they know.
Nearly 3 years later and after a period of self-evaluation, alcohol consumption, mishaps, jamming attempts, home recordings and late night talks, pondering on life and art, One Block Society decided officially to reunite, determined to rock 'n' roll till Alzheimer's knocks their brains out! The idea of recording new songs came naturally and felt like the right thing to do by all four band members. Plans were mapped out and recording sessions for The Everchanging Skyline, a full length LP, were scheduled. But the whole project was soon abandoned and eventually postponed until further notice. A new approach to the objective came to light and the band is currently in the process of rehearsing/arranging fresh material for their new studio release entitled Silent Host, a multi-chapter concept EP. Hopefully it will be released in fall of 2011.
Different styles blend together. Post-Hardcore experimentation and R 'n' R attitude coexist with Alternative Rock melodies and New Prog references. Metal riffs give way to electronic soundscapes, vintage keyboard transitions and Space Rock lift-offs, only to land back down rediscovering their Hardcore/Punk roots. This controversial mixing of genres is the very essence that defines the band's own character and motivational force throughout the years. It reflects the creative diversity of its band members, setting the foundations for One Block Society's non-conventional attitude towards music.
