"Her self-penned songs may have been the work of a nihilist, as she often claimed. The accuracy and discipline she displayed when singing live was that of a classical musician. Nico's voice was a deep, clear contralto tone, free of vibrato and exact pitch. Her style of singing, her formidable appearance and her introspective lyrical imagery were 'unique' in the sense that their heritage could not so easily be assigned. She was a female composer who did not match the generic categories of rock or folk; she sang her own creations not with a staged passion but with clarity and eloquence."
