Nick Autry

Nick Autry – singer, songwriter, musician, producer, engineer – is one of the new breed of artists that has taken the best of the past and blended it with the technology of the present to create a sound that is both sophisticated and raw, that somehow manages to combine the best of the digital age with the urgency of the geniuses of analog.



Autry carries on a tradition of sorts that was started by a distant ancestor, cowboy singing star and revolutionary music businessman Gene Autry. But any similarity ends with the name. Because Nick Autry writes and sings music born of a rural tradition of dawn-to-dusk, backbreaking work on tobacco farms and in the Lowcountry swamps, work that screams for the relief provided only by musical instruments at night. During it all, the radio is on, carrying everyone from Merle Haggard to Led Zeppelin to Skynyrd to the Hanks (Williams, that is, both of them) over the airwaves, feeding the soul throughout a country that also spawned the likes of jazz innovators like John Coltrane.



Nick Autry has a lot in common with these people, and at the same time is nothing like any of them. His music carries the angst of the common man, as well as the same hopeful optimism that keeps that man going day after day to a soundtrack of hard-edged country and rock music that recalls its creators and inspires its torchbearers.
