M.I.A. Drops Eclectic Bass-Heavy Track “Beep,” Reveals ‘MATA’ LP Cover Art

Published: September 30, 2022

Sri Lankan artist M.I.A. has shared another cut from her forthcoming sixth studio LP, MATA. “Beep” is a mix of bars, drums and bass with a punchy beat.

“Yeah I’m tryna come through / Beep beep,” she raps on the song. “Yeah I’m bringing someone new / Beep beep.”

MATA will mark M.I.A.’s first album in six years, following 2016’s AIM, and her first project released through Island Records. “Beep” is the third single M.I.A. has delivered to fans, succeeding May's "The One" and last month’s “Popular.”

Along with debuting the new track, M.I.A. shared the kaleidoscopic MATA cover art.

“I think there’s a bit of a battle on the record,” M.I.A. told Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe. “That there is a bit of a clash, but the clash is like your ego and spirituality. Those are the clashes.”

“Because as a musician, you need some ego, otherwise you can’t do it. Also the genre of music that, genres I should say, is all very much like egocentric,” she continued.

While M.I.A. had previously threatened to leak the album if it wasn’t out by the end of September, she just announced that the project will be out on October 14. She also teased exciting collaborations with Doja Cat and Nicki Minaj, artists she’s been waiting years to work with.
