Arlo Parks’ Cover Of Julia Jacklin’s ‘Good Guy’ Is Probably What Dreams Are Made Of

Published: August 25, 2022

Arlo Parks just covered Julia Jacklin‘s ‘Good Guy’ for triple j’s Like A Version, and the results were as beautiful as you’d expect.

This is the 22-year-old British singer’s first time in Australia, as she tours her new album Collapsed In Sunbeams which earned her the prestigious 2021 Mercury Music Prize for Best Album.

Speaking to triple j, Parks said that she wanted to cover Jacklin’s track as she’s had a “sentimental attachment to Julia Jacklin and her voice” as she saw her play just before her very first festival three years ago.

“I chose to cover ‘Good Guy’ because there’s this really distinct mix of melancholy mixed with a little touch of funniness,” Parks says in a video where she explains her decision to cover the song.

The result feels like a beautiful and ethereal tribute to Julia Jacklin’s original track; rather than a complete re-imagining the song altogether.

Parks’ voice during the cover sounds a little bit different to what we’re used to — a sweet and airy falsetto that perfectly captures Jacklin’s childlike need for affection amid a kind of awareness of the futility of trying to draw water from an empty well.

Parks has already performed a bunch of shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Darwin this month.
