The US Government Is Hiring a Burning Man Project Manager

Published: January 27, 2016

Every year, tens of thousands of people (70,000 of them, to be more exact), descend upon Nevada’s remote Black Rock Desert for nine days of art, music, and all varieties of hedonism. (Drugs, nudity, psytrance, etc.) While Burning Man started three decades ago as a middle finger to the law and the rules of the so-called “default world,” the event has since become vastly more organized as it has grown in size and popularity.

Now, the federal government is playing a bigger role in the Burn, as exemplified by a new job posting on the federal jobs website USAJOBS. The Department of the Interior, which is responsible for the management and conservation of most federal land and natural resources, is looking for a Project Manager to help manage, protect and develop the land on which Burning Man happens. This famous playa is a flat, prehistoric lake bed that is completely devoid of any plants or animals and is covered in a fine alkaline dust. Weather conditions range from pleasant to sweltering to completely inhospitable, which, as any Burner will tell you, is all part of the fun. Last year, the Bureau of Land Management submitted a request to build a one million dollar VIP-type area for officials working the event. The request was ultimately rescinded.

The Project Manager position pays between $70,000-$90,000, based on experience, and the new hire is required to relocate to northern Nevada. According to the job description, “the work environment varies from an office setting where the incumbent is in contact with work associates, to a field setting where the incumbent is working alone, in a group, in extremely remote and adverse situations.” The application process closes on February 8, 2016. Burning takes place August 28-September 5, 2016.
