The German band’s second album is loud, not just volume-wise, but spiritually. Everything fires at every second, saddled atop a steed made of mid-80s black metal riffs.

Death Obvious — Death Obvious | Transcending Obscurity Records | Death Metal + Doom Metal | Finland

Here we have death-doom that sounds like it never listened to the Peaceville Three and instead grew up on 2010’s avant-garde black metal. Death Obvious cling to lumbering riffs and wrap them in a murky, death-conscious atmosphere, upgrading relatively straightforward songwriting into a more affective experience.

Skogskult — Skogskult | Bonebag Records | Stoner Metal + Doom Metal | Sweden (Umeå)

Skogskult hit like mead and rye bread; filling, intoxicating, and comfortable. Their take on stoner doom is warm rather than crushing, even though they have the riffs to earn their place in the genre.
