New Releases 11/2/25 – 11/8/25

QrixkuorThe Womb of the World | Dark Descent Records | Death Metal | United Kingdom (London, England)

Qrixkuor’s sophomore album is yet another dose of surreal, Lovecraftian death metal that engulfs you like the tendrils of some phantasmal beast. Accompanying the duo once again is the enigmatic Orchestra of Silent Stars, who elevates these compositions with all manner of gothic instrumental flourishes, from the haunting piano intro of “Slithering Serendipity” to the bombastic horns (and guest vocals courtesy of Jaded Lungs) that announce the dawn of a terrifying new era on “And you Shall Know Perdition as Your Shrine.” Submit to The Womb of the World and be blessed with forbidden knowledge beyond the ken of mortal man.

Cold in BerlinWounds | New Heavy Sounds | Post-Punk + Doom Metal | United Kingdom (London, England)

How does doom metal fit into post-punk? Quite seamlessly, judging by Cold in Berlin’s fifth album. The London group composes dreams by candlelight as they soak powerful guitars beneath synthpop percussion and gothic bellows.

WaldgeflüsterKnochengesänge I + II | AOP Records | Black Metal | Germany (Munich)

Germany’s Waldgeflüster have been away for four years, but have spent that time well–they’re releasing not one, but two full-length albums. Knochengesänge I is classic Waldgeflüster. Their brand of atmospheric, nature-focused black metal gives one the feeling of wandering through ancient alpine forests in autumn. It’s personal and introspective, solemn and triumphant in turns. Long, wind-swept tremolo-picked passages with black metal shrieks will give way to very heartfelt clean-sung vocals, including a beautiful performance from Austin Lunn of Pantopticon on “Krähenpsalme.” Meanwhile, Knochengesänge II presents alternate versions of the same songs. It’s not unusual for a black metal band to release a fully acoustic album alongside a metal one, but that’s not what Waldgeflüster has done here. Opening track “Das Klagelied der Krähen” certainly fits that mold, with a sparse, emotive acoustic arrangement, but the second song, “Frankfurt, 19. März,” defies expectations by bringing the metal elements back. It’s not black metal, striking instead closer to the slow, tragic doom of 40 Watt Sun. The rest of the album follows suit for a powerful, intimate experience.

KauanWayhome | Artoffact Records | Post-Rock + Post-Metal | Finland (Helsinki)

On their first proper album since 2021, Kauan push further into post-rock territory by making an album-length song, only dividing it for ease-of-use for listeners. Wayhome tells of a non-descript journey and how that wears on a subject, speaking through emotional touchstones rather than plot and character.

Drain…IS YOUR FRIEND | Epitaph Records | Crossover Thrash | United States (Santa Cruz, CA)

Unintentionally, Drain summarized their appeal on “Nights Like These” with the lyrics, “The energy I feed – you feed – we feel alive/ Just for tonight/ No thoughts at all/ I feel no hurt – I feel no pain.” They specialize in crunchy thrash-infuenced hardcore baked under the California sun. And, lighthearted as they may be, Drain carry themselves with the proper amount of self-respect to keep their music weighty.

KostnatěníPřílišnost (Excess) | Willowtip Records | Black Metal | United States (Minneapolis, MN)

Minnesota’s premier one-man avant-garde black metal project returns to dominate discourse regarding microtonality in extreme music for the next six months. In all seriousness, Přílišnost is another excellent release that sees D.L. continuing to hone his trademark blend of scratchy dissonance and exotic melodies influenced by Middle Eastern music, but now with even wilder curveballs. Opener “Dokonalé křišťálové město (Perfect Crystal City)” kicks the album off with brassy drones layered atop jungle breakbeats, building to an industrial metal climax that could be the soundtrack of the Butlerian Jihad. “Mrtvola Jupitera (Corpse of Jupiter)” is graced with reverb-y synth that gives the whole track a fantastical elegance. The gnashing mayhem of “Dále zvenčí (Further from Outside)” drops into a huge breakdown before transforming and taking to the skies with a soaring, melodic bridge. Přílišnost has many more surprises that await intrepid listeners, so we’ll leave the rest for you to discover.

Glorious DepravityDeath Never Sleeps | Transcending Obscurity | Death Metal | United States (New York City, NY)

Death metal for death metal’s sake from some East Coast heavy hitters. Glorious Depravity are as innovative as a bagel BLT, and that’s the point. It’s an outlet for the members to play the highest quality and most quintessential death metal possible. To be disappointined with Death Never Sleeps is then to be disappointed with the genre at large.
