Grand Cadaver’s roster holds an impressive level of prestige that, if not well-managed, could distract from their current output. The group is comprised of former members of Dark Tranquility, The Halo Effect, Tiamat, and Katatonia, and serves as an outlet for their basal instincts. Fortunately, this cuts through the baggage of, technically, being a supergroup and redirects the focus to sweet, Swedish death metal. Today, we’re premiering “The Rot Beneath,” the first track from their upcoming EP of the same name. Check it out below.

The streamlined, razorblade-encrusted style of death metal on “The Rot Beneath” relies on the ear for melody Grand Cadaver’s core members have honed for four decades. It’s inherently not raucous, especially compared to other HM-2-loving acts, though Grand Cadaver aren’t masquerading that’s the case. They know where their strengths lay. So, they strip melodic death metal into its tightest form, phlebotomizing it until all that remains is muscular riffs. It’s straightforward, but it’s hard to imagine “The Rot Beneath” benefitting from, or even needing, any extra horsepower.
The band comments:
When you look at the state of the world today, it’s difficult not to feel despair. We see madness, death, war, corruption and polarisation. And it makes you think, what are we if not the cause of the problem, what are we but the rot beneath? This is the anthem to mankind’s demise.
