A ‘live-in-the-studio’ video is a great way to experience what Park+Riot has to offer–the German sludge/hardcore group’s 2024 album Wise Words from Well-Fed Mouths was a couple of ambient synthesizer passages away from being totally raw in the first place. The group draw from hardcore punk’s ethos and turn it into sludgy, speaker-ravaging noise that casts a harsh light on the growing cracks in our socio-political landscape — from their home country of Germany to beyond. Interspersing bitter melodies and surprisingly intricate vocals with loud, crashing noise and screams, the album whips up a furious storm of discontent.
In the video we’re premiering today, you can see just how little sits between the duo and their final product – it’s very much a what-you-see-is-what-you-get situation, recorded live Ulf Blomberg of HoboRec Studios. Both drummer Samuel Clemens and guitarist Michael Geib take turns on vocals while playing, maximizing their decibels-per-member contributions and interlacing their two styles in clever call-and-response stylings. In just under three minutes, “Lungs Out” navigates through a variety of nasty little riffs, keeping outraged ferocity front and center throughout.
