So, Morrissey wore a pin for a far-right extremist party during his Tonight Show performance

Morrissey has spent the better part of his post-Smiths career dropping reactionary right-wing aphorisms as frequently as he releases albums, but the singer has been taking his political views to an unprecedented extreme by showing support for a right-wing extremist group in the UK; with his support of the controversial party culminating last night during Morrissey’s Tonight Show performance.

Last week, fans were disturbed after a video was posted to Instagram of Morrissey signing memorabilia following his performance at New York City’s Lunt-Fontanne Theater – while wearing, as some fans noticed, a pin supporting the UK political party “For Britain.”

For Britain, founded by anti-Islam activisit Anne Marie Waters, has been condemned by multiple UK-based anti-hate foundations for its fascist and racist attitudes. Even those already deeply embedded in Britain’s political right – including Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage – have condemned For Britain’s hateful views:

Being in the middle of a high-profile tour and with a new album release imminent, Morrissey did what any artist in his position would do by performing on The Tonight Show. But of course, remembering who we’re talking about here, the singer made sure to do it in that reliably-ignorant, increasingly-exhausting Morrissey way: during arguably his most high-profile appearance on American television over the last several years, Morrissey made sure to wear that very same “For Britain” pin:

Though Morrissey’s political statement went unaddressed by Fallon (and Democratic candidate/fellow guest Peter Buttigieg, no less), the internet was considerably more comfortable speaking up:

Unfortunately, the singer has gone further than just brandishing a pin when it comes to showing support for the hate group. Last year, Morrissey, defended For Britain against accusations of racism with claims that “I don’t think the word racist has any meaning anymore, other than to say: ‘You don’t agree with me so you’re a racist. People can be utterly, utterly stupid.” He went on to affirm that with the emergence of For Britain, “it is the first time in my life that I will vote for a political party. Finally, I have hope.”

Please shut up Morrissey, that joke isn’t funny anymore.
