News of Alabama’s new abortion law passing this Wednesday—a revision that banned abortion outright and reframed it as a criminalized act punishable by law, even in cases of rape or incest—has left many both equally shocked and ready to fight back against it.

Of the many speaking up in protest against these new restrictions on women’s reproductive rights are a number of musicians; refreshingly using their platform to illuminate the dangerous and discriminatory implications of these rights being stripped away.

One of the first major artists to speak out against the new law upon its passing, Lady Gaga shared a message of solidarity which said that these new restrictions are “a travesty and I pray for all these women and young girls who will suffer at the hands of this system”:

A major issue with the passing of a law that places such strict control over women’s bodies is that the senators who brought it into reality are all men, obviously a group that lacks the authority to make decisions on reproductive rights. Ex-One Directioner Liam Payne pointed out that “abortion up to a certain point should always be legal, it’s only right that women are given that choice to make for themselves,” while others were (justifiably) more scathing in calling out the senators:

Another number of musicians couldn’t help but get a sense of déjà vu when it came to these new laws, with many comparing their passing to the terrifying, misogynist dystopia of The Handmaid’s Tale:

Beyond the oppressive nature of these laws, many were quick to point out the Alabama senate’s approach to abortion as just the latest evidence that the patriarchy is alive and well in its continued attempt to exert control over women’s bodies:

If you’re in Canada and wondering how you can help preserve pro-choice abortion rights, join or donate to the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada or one of the many local groups listed on their website.
