Full Album Stream: Hammers of Misfortune – ‘Overtaker’

Published: November 29, 2022

The (previously) Bay Area-based metal collective, Hammers of Misfortune, are having a moment in the fading days of 2022. Following on the heels of the recent Decibel Hall of Fame induction of their 2006 album, The Locust Years, in issue 219, they are set to release their seventh full-length, Overtaker. There is an excellent symmetry to these two events, as vocalist Jamie Myers, who first appeared on The Locust Years, brings her vocal talents back to Hammers on Overtaker. In fact, the lineup for the band’s latest is a mix of new and old faces. In addition to the returning Myers, mainman John Cobbett (guitar/bass/Mellotron) is joined by his partner Sigrid Sheie (Hammond B3/vocals), previous vocalist Mike Scalzi (vocals), as well as the former rhythm section of Vektor, Blake Anderson (drums/tympani/piano) and Frank Chin (bass).

While the album has many of the hallmarks of previous Hammers efforts, its trad and prog metal leanings are amped up with some thrash metal voltage, giving it a high-adrenalin feel. The 10-tracker, and first Hammers album since 2016’s Dead Revolution, was recorded in both home studios and at Steve Albini’s Electric Audio by Sanford Parker during the pandemic and is set to be self-released digitally on December 2. You can preorder it for digital download here.

Here’s what the band had to say about its latest release:

“We are very excited to share Overtaker in its entirety! We hope you have as much fun listening to it as we had making it. Enjoy! Cheers, everyone!”
