Listen | Salt Cathedral: “Lift Me Up”

Salt Cathedral

If I learned anything from “Rainy Days”, it’s that Salt Cathedral‘s b-sides are definitely something to seek out. With it’s completely programmed drums, it was a rather subversive introduction to the Brooklyn based Colombian duo’s shift into electronic music. So much so that I was largely aware it was even happening until they released the much more obvious “Tease” off their OOM VELT EP. While the twosome have leaned far more heavily into electronics with each subsequent single/release, they’re still finding fresh ways to approach it and make music in that vein that’s distinct and interesting. Enter “Lift Me Up”, a song from their recently release b-sides EP Homage, it finds the duo put their own characteristic spin on dance music.

Juliana Ronderos’ vocals are still given the freedom to soar as evidenced by the track’s stark introduction but it isn’t long before elements filter in to give the track a bit of a kick towards its eventual forward shuffle. From their earliest incarnation as il abanico, Salt Cathedral’s appeal has lied mostly in its ability to balance its various aspects and while the genre has changed, that largely holds true now as the duo balance Ronderos’ emotive vocals and personal lyrics with instrumental breaks and samples to create a veritable floor-filler in “Lift Me Up”.

Much like “Rainy Days” “Lift Me Up” raises the question of if a Salt Cathedral consider a track this good to be only b-side worthy, are any of even prepared for the songs meant for a proper release? I’m gonna go with no but only time and Salt Cathedral’s next release (hopefully their much anticipated full length debut) will tell.
