We search for happiness as if it were a notch on the radio dial. What if we find love on every station, but keep turning the knob anyway? Overcome by a suspicion that our hearts can't tell the difference between the sublime and the coincidental.
New London Fire's second album, Happiness Through Radios and Wires, is the search for that perfect station - a genre-bending foray into the countless ways we find love. It's a blend of catchy melodies that recall 1950's-era radio jams and modern pop gadgetry, which soars over earnest compositions.
Following their critically-acclaimed debut, I Sing the Body Holographic, the New Jersey-based band hit the road, had an uninsured tree crush their tour van, and left Eyeball Records.
The unsigned 5-piece recorded Happiness independently, perfecting a warmth that bleeds through the speakers via vintage amplifiers and an innumerable collection of keyboards that Jason Debiak lovingly blends into an atmospheric mash of sonic intonation.
"I feel like music has been lacking that romanticism, joy . melodies," NLF singer and guitarist David Debiak said in a basement full of old records and sound equipment. "When we went to do this record, I wanted to incorporate everything I loved about pop music as a kid."
Inspired by the Beach Boys and Motown Records, amongst others, Happiness Through Radios and Wires is a dedication to the reason New London Fire fell in love with music when they were kids. Namely, scanning the radio in search of a new jam - happiness.
