OBSTRUCTURES// has been designing and manufacturing aluminum instruments since 1999. Formally known as TACTICAL WORKS the first instruments were made for the band NEW BRUTALISM//. Partnered with BASFORD AMPLIFICATION custom aluminum clad tube amps and speaker cabinets have also been manufactured for the band. Since then we have produced close to 20 instruments for clients around the globe. Performance has always been the design intent, resulting in a “guitar as tool” aesthetic. OBSTRUCTURES// in involved in architecture, graphic, and furniture design resulting in a very tight schedule. Guitars happen to be one of our interests, but will always be built in small runs. We have recently partnered with a CNC machine shop in the Knoxville area to produce instruments on demand making our supply issues a problem of the past.
To satisfy the demands of left handed players the instruments have always been ambidextrous to avoid the compromise involved in flipping a standard guitar. Two jacks are provided flanking the strap button, and the opposite horn is pre-drilled and tapped to accept a strap button. Instruments are solid body aluminum at 3/4" thick and 5/8" thick. This mass of metal provides extreme sustain and a wide frequency range. High quality Lindy Fralin alnico pole-piece p-90 pick-ups are employed as well as Sperzel locking tuners and Schaller strap-locks. Case included as standard equipment. Currently our only options are anodization color- black, bright dip silver, or two tone. We can also remove the volume knobs and direct wire the pick-ups to the jacks for the minimalist. Coming soon is our 5/8" model with no electronics, one pick-up and two jacks. Instruments are available now in both black and silver.
