My life was changed forever when I recieved a small book in the Washington D.C. airport. The Hare Krishna devotee gave me a copy of The Higher Taste and said a bunch of stuff that I wasn't really hearing. After he finished his pitch I said to him, feeling much too sophisticated to be taken in, "So now youre gonna ask for money, right?" He was silent for a moment, then said "No, you take it, no charge". The book sat on my shelf undisturbed. A couple of years later I saw devotees on Harinama in Boston, New Years Eve-1992. I thought to myself "What do they think they're accomplishing? They look ridiculous!" Soon after I happened to wander by the Boston Temple at 72 Commonwealth Ave and saw that they offered a free nightly diner program. Being young, broke and already a vegetarian I decided to try it. I liked the food, but still kept my distance. Then one night after prasadam, Radhika Raman Prabhu was playing Jaya Radha-Madhava before giving class. I had never wanted to hear the classes before but the music drew me in. As I listened something happened, something clicked, and Krishna, by His Grace, captured my heart. I began to realize that I was surrounded by some of the most amazing, dedicated and intelligent people I had ever known. Vaisnava philosophy is deep-like a post graduate study of all religious thought. A non-sectarian, non-dogmatic understanding of the Supreme Source of all religions. The Supreme Person and goal of life-Sri Krishna.
