Najem Sworb - Hydrocarbon - Video
PUBLISHED:  Feb 14, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
My initial memories of quality records such as we have here from Najem Sworb are from the likes of Art Of Trance, Airwave (remember 'Save Me'?) and Vincent De Moor. Generally all perpetrators of trance in the 1990's and early into 2000. Hydrocarbon is the title track of the simply brilliant four-track EP from 2007 on the now defunct Ai Records who were responsible in their day for the odd sublime release of deep electronic music.

This EP is a fine example of how to release music on hard copy, to my mind. I would infinitely prefer parting with £8 - £12 for a four track vinyl such as this, with decent artwork, than spend similar amounts on a nine or ten track LP where up to half of the tracks can often fall into the producer's "and I also made this" pile, though I realize the harsh and inconsiderate nature of that last comment I can't help but feel, even with the utmost admiration for so many producers, LP's are too often watered down by the impact of several tracks that are arguably quite obviously of less interest, or like a take-two or take-three of a track that is much more clear in it's portrayal of a concept - if you pretty much said it right the first time, why immediately repeat yourself in a slightly different order.

It is a difficult/pricey venture in putting out dance releases and must be tempting to take that opportunity to put out as much as possible at that one time. In my own, single minded opinion (which is all it is) by all means, release extra tracks as digital only alongside a hard copy release, even with a separate charge, but for the hard copy itself less can definitely be more, especially in the eyes of the collector (let's face it, the DJ today would use the mp3 more often than not anyway, and at the least, be able to use mp3 alongside vinyl/cd). There must be dozens of LP's I haven't bought, but would buy now in an instant if they were condensed little jemlike versions of themselves. A decent four track vinyl EP is something great to behold.

Najem Sworb has put out a digital only LP this year, available via 'Days Of Being Wild' at Beatport with more icy techno landscapes and glints of dark trance throughout. Check it out on Soundcloud. Loving the Najem sound!
