Patchworks is definitely a name to remember if you’re interested in today’s soul and funk scene. Following the trail of success left by Uptown Funk Empire, The Dynamics and Metropolitan Jazz Affair, Patchworks, album after album, proves his musical ubiquity and unexpectedly striking in various genres.
After beeing bassist and guitarist in various bands, Patchworks started producing in the mid nineties and keeps on mixing today technologies with the raw spirits of soul music’s golden years.
This time he’s chosen soul music, offering up an album that’s subtle yet enraged, teeming with rich and contrasting orchestration, as well as remarkable vocalists (Hawa, Mounam, JRMNM, andMr Day).
Label and producer have remained loyal to a vintage production style, while featuring hip hop, house, breakbeat and afrobeat influences - a vintage sound within a contemporary approach to music.
It’s easy to feel Stax and Motown influences (“Mr President Theme”, “Love and happiness” or “Celebrate”) or more cinematic directions which could recall David Axelrod’s works (“Trouble”). Even if Mr President never gets straight to Afro Beat, Tracks like “From North to South” digs the dirtyness of raw African funk horn sections which very personal flavour !
Listening to “Meet Again” or “Get it Sometime” takes you on a trip to Spanish Harlem, with a heavy latin funk touch. Various directions in the release but one common flavour sounding like a paradox (“Tribute to RZA”,Wu Tang Clan’s producer sounds like recorded in the sixties…) : Old school vintage soul music of today !



Following the club and radio success of hits like Love and Happiness or Meet Again, this record is a collection of gems that collectors will love, as will soul and other music lovers of all horizons. The very catchy The Best Is Yet To Come appears to be one of the main soul music hits of 2011 !!
