"Dabbling in experimental effects, psychedelic indulgences and straightforward melodicism, the local boys in Mountain Animal Hospital stand as one of Santa Cruz's most promising bands. There's an air of confidence and accomplishment to Mountain Animal Hospital's songs and arrangements that sets the band apart from its peers. While many psych-rockers fall victim to the temptation to bury the songs in washes of noise and effects, Mountain Animal Hospital shows much more restraint. The band's experimental ornamentation never overwhelms what are essentially perfectly crafted pop songs delivered with bracing optimism and passion."

"True story: I once took my feline life partner Cat Power—only the greatest black cat of the 21st century—to the Mountain Animal Hospital this Santa Cruz band is named after. The vet is Gary, and he’s basically the Cat Whisperer. Totally amazing. So I played some MAH for Cat Power, wondering if it would trigger any memories. She felt that the band’s eclectic melodicism recalled the heyday of Santa Cruz rock, when Camper Van Beethoven or Spot 1019 could make an album full of ear-grabbing songs without sounding the same in any of them. And she drew a comparison to the hushed but complex introspection of bands like Bon Iver, whose popularity bodes well for the future of MAH. I squeezed her fuzzy face and told her, “Who’s a pretty black kitty? Is it Cat Power? Oh yes it is! Oh yes it is!”

"Santa Cruz has a reputation for producing distinct-sounding bands. Maybe it’s the culture there—the skate and the surf and the warm California sun—but a Santa Cruz band is rarely boring. Mountain Animal Hospital keeps up the tradition with their mesh of progressive, psychedelic rock and whale noises. With something crazy always thrown into the music mix, Mountain Animal Hospital keeps the audience engaged.”

".I don’t even know what I need to say about Mountain Animal Hospital. They keep writing songs, keep playing tons of shows, and keep getting better and better. They always manage to sound solid no matter what surreal tangent they’re off on. That’s the main thing: each song is fresh and interesting without ever straying into I-guess-I’ll-put-up-with-this-to-hear-that-one-I-like territory. And they had great Christmas lights on the keyboard and stuff. It was really fun."

"Startled By Deer will be the perfect CD to listen to next time I find myself driving across the desert at night. The mysterious melodies and haunting vocals infused with a goodly measure of traditional rock instrumentation, (somewhat reminescent of mid-seventies Floyd, and early Genesis), wisps the listener away to the realm of contemplative reflection. The kind of music you want to listen to when no one else is around to interrupt."

"MAH seems restless, and while (to their credit) they never actually do quite settle on their own “signature sound,” they manage to cover a rather startling breadth of material for a young band."

"The band's style could easily be thrown into the indie category, but an element of larger-than-life texturing gives it a sound best described as epic rock."
