“Rock’n’roll smells phony and false. It is sung, played and written for the most part by cretinous goons and by means of its almost imbecilic reiteration, and sly, lewd, in plain fact dirty lyrics . it manages to be the martial music of every sideburned delinquent on the face of the earth.” (Frank Sinatra 1957)
Mojokings crawled out of the East Anglia region of the UK in summer 2007 to kick some life back into a very stagnant and predictable rockabilly scene.
The original incarnation of the band was lead by singer songwriter/guitarist and founding member, Paul Scoulding. Joined by drummer Scotty Roberts and double bass player Lee Payne, Mojokings started forging their own style of rock’n’roll. Mixing 50s flash with borrowed riffs and chops from, The Who, Small Faces, The Sonics (to name a few of their early influences), Paul set about writing some original songs for what would become the bands first studio album, ‘Got The Devil In Me’, released in 2008 on UK independent label, Pink’n’Black Records. The album gained great popularity in the UK’s rockabilly scene and also found success in Europe and Japan, as well as sales in Austailia and the USA.
The band was getting a great reputation for themselves as a live act and things were looking good for the band, even getting nominated for a 2008 indie award for best live act!
In September 2009, Scotty and Lee decided to quit the band, leaving Paul wondering what to do and where to go next.
He contacted an old drumming friend, Olly Simmonds, who expressed great interest in working with Paul again. After Paul’s bass playing brother, Rich Shakeout agreed to stand in for the next gig, Mojokings stormed the stage at the UK’s Bedlam Breakout Psychobilly festival. A few gigs then had to be cancelled as a full time bass player still needed to be found.
After a few offers from people, Mark Palmer contacted Paul and after a rehearsal was set up, it was agreed Mark would be the new Mojo bass man. Paul and Olly started writing material together, heavier and harder than before, with more influences finding their way in until the sound that was being produced was quite unlike any sound around!! The live shows were getting wilder and sweatier and the band never failed to whip crowds into a frenzy and blow the stage where ever they played. Then, as things were going better than ever, Mark announced his departure from the band due to personal circumstances.
Rich Shakeout was called on once again to stand in for a gig. The show was wild and the band played like their lives depended on it!! After the gig, Rich had such a buzz from it that he contacted Paul and Olly and said that he was to be Mojokings bass player, after all it made perfect sence!!
Pauls guitar sound gives a nod to the nasty side of 50’s rock’n’roll. The kind of rock’n’roll that made teenagers riot, juvenille gangs declaire war with one another, and what made preachers and parents believe the Devil himself was coming to get you!! Add to this Ollys powerhouse punk rockstar drumming, double kick drums thundering through your soul and Rich Shakeouts double bass slapping that shows no mercy for the bitch he holds in his hands… and we think we got something….
