Modern Pop Records.
Modern Pop Records is a London/Hertfordshire based independent record label, heavily influenced by the Post-Punk era, DIY indie label. Formed in August, 2006, its debut release came in the form of a tribute to the late, Syd Barrett. Recorded live in the band's bedroom, and done in one take, Lucifer Sam, covered by NEiLS CHiLDREN became MPR001. Released on a one sided, white label, hand numbered out of 300 and stamped vinyl, MPR's debut release has become a collector’s item and sells for ridiculous amounts on eBay.
Up next is a new band, spotted by Brandon almost 6 months previous, Strange Idols. Hailing from Eastbourne, now scattered across the prettier parts of London's east and west. Having been so impressed by their current single at the time, "its No Fun", MPR decided to keep a close eye on the Postcard / Indie Pop style 5 piece. Fronted by the amazing vocal talent of Launette, and possibly the best songwriting duo, (Julian Mash and David Strange) we have heard for a very long time, we thought it was only right to release Strange Idols' next single, "She's Gonna Let You Down Again", MPR002 . The single sold out just as quickly as it hit the "new release 7"s", generating interest from the likes of BBC Radio 1's Huw Stephens, Marc Riley on BBC 6, Artrocker Magazine and scoring favourable reviews all across the UK.
MPR003 saw London based D-I-Y post punk 4-piece, Electricity In Our Homes, release their debut EP, The Shareholders Meeting EP. The limited 7" sold out 2 weeks before it's official release, and the band enjoyed packed out release parties at Cheshunt's, The Only Fun In Town clubnight and their very own London headline show at the Pool Bar in Old St. EIOH also secured themselves the front cover of P.I.X magazine, and often share bills with hotly tipped for 2008, Hatcham Social, up and coming London based all-girl outfit, Ipso Facto, and, receive favourable approval from the likes of Neils Children and The Horrors.
April 2008 will see newest signing to Modern Pop Records, Goodnight And I Wish* launch with their debut EP, ‘Dreams.Wishes & Fairy Tales’, MPR004, released on Monday 5th May 2008. The release will come in the form of a limited edition CD, hand numbered out of 100. Goodnight And I Wish* is a solo project that focuses on the more poetic, narrative and childlike aspects of musical performance. A collection of short poetic compositions that will make you feel like you have just read a book of fairy tale stories from your youth that you thought you had left behind in your parent's attic along with your old toys and your innocent childhood memories. Think Syd Barret singing the Spider cartoons from 1991 mixed with dark 80's pop and you have 'Dreams.Wishes & Fairy Tales'. A truly unique, weird, wonderful and somewhat eccentric collection of compositions, you will find a part of you in Goodnight And I Wish*.
Modern Pop Records is an independent record label that is truly into its music and will search high and low for the right unique sounds and styles to fit its agenda. By doing this we give bands and artists who might have found it a lot harder to release a record the platform to make their mark and go on to reach their own goals, lead by passion and belief, not money and misconceptions of fame.
