Metamusic's sound spans the gulf between downtempo and
trip-hop on the one hand (think Massive Attack or Team Sleep) and more guitar-led, albeit leftfield
fare like early Biffy Clyro or post-Kid A Radiohead. The band themselves might disagree; citing
"anything jaggy and guitar driven" as an influence, they also draw on "the 'Seattle sound', and all
those 'weird' states that recreate its quirkiness, bands like Menomena and Explosions in the Sky
from places like Portland and Austin."
World to Come, awash with electronics and delicate vocals, is still best tackled head-on and it
pulls no punches where lyrical content is concerned, as Phil Morris, their lyricist explains,
"thematically it follows from a demo, Safe Passages to Adulthood. we had decided to live
together and make a go of it in Manchester. Each EP is a moment in the formation of our lives;
some tracks are about finding your feet as you leave your teens, a lesson in love, of guilt; but
there's a lot of social commentary in there [about] those faceless companies that are running and
ruining our planet. 'Everyvolcanicashcloud.' is us resisting."
Pretty deep then, but what's the final word? "We're a band and a brotherhood", says Phil earnestly,
"I think we passed the point of no return a long time ago and now we're too stubborn not to see it
through." Metamusic are well and truly at the cutting edge; musically forward thinking, they couple
that with the earnestness of a generation that doesn't aspire to hiring a floor of rooms at the Riot
House or owning two private jets; what they do is make music, and they do that exceptionally well.
