I don’t know if you have ever been to Brooklyn, but it is one of those places that you have to return to. There is something about its people, food and music that keep me coming back for more. As a huge fan of the Brooklyn scene, new material from BK usually doesn’t pass by me. Its sound is specific; I’d say not your typical hiphop. Seems like the borough inspires making music.
One resident is Melo-X. I was drawn to him because of his deep voice and cadence that screams Brooklyn. He is in love with his city, just listen to his “Statue of Liberty” song. The very next thing I noticed were people who he featured on his latest project More Merch. We are talking about fellow Brooklynites: Theophilus London, Telli of NinjaSonic and Jesse Boykins III. From the west coast, Melo featured LA spitter Kendrick Lamar and Oakland’s own Goapele. Furthermore, he has his own record label called GALAX Recordings. In the near future he will be working with other artist from Brooklyn, like NTU FARA, Lil’ Friday and another project with Jesse Boykins is in the works.

A few weeks back, I had a chance to talk to Melo (who also goes by Mustafa, a nickname, that he says stuck after his “africanesque with touches of 70s fashion period”) and ask him a few questions about his music and his life. He is 25 years old and has an impressive music catalog respected by critics, fans and peers alike. He has been working as a musician since he was 14, when he started recording in big studios.
Besides being a DJ, producer and audio engineer Melo is a promising photographer who is very serious about his work. He did some work for fellow artists as well as the Autumn/Winter catalog for CAT Footwear. Even so, he says, emceeing came first: “I was always into poetry and great speeches as a kid. My poems were featured in my junior high school, and high school year books. I did a lot of spoken word in my schools and I got a scholarship based on that. Also I was in advanced English classes. So my love for words has always been there and emceeing came naturally at a very young age.” Funny story, he and his friend decided to be rappers as kids, bought their notebooks, and the next day he had his first rap written.
Melo’s music features a lot of live instruments that I always like and pay attention to and I was excited to find out that he plays guitar and piano. His next project will feature a piano piece that he composed and played himself. His music influences are always changing. “I listen to so many different forms of music and sounds. Right now I have been listening to a lot of UK artists like Wiley, MJ Cole, Jamie XX, and a few others. I am inspired by everyday life and conversations with people. Also the sounds I hear always inspire me.”

Right now I have been listening to a lot of UK artists like Wiley, MJ Cole, Jamie XX, and a few others. I am inspired by everyday life and conversations with people. Also the sounds I hear always inspire me.”
He became well known after his Maxwell remix and he says he is always making new ones: “I’m always remixing peoples albums. Most recently I remixed Erykah Badu’s new album you might hear some of that sprinkled around. I’m also working on a series of instrumental albums that should be hitting the Internet later this year.” The Maxwell remix might of put him on the map here in the states, but in Europe he established a name because of his performance at Summer Bubblers, a fresh talent night held at London’s venue Cargo. “The Summer Bubbler nights are to showcase the freshest talent inhabiting the left of center regions in the world of contemporary pop, soul and hiphop.” Melo admits that this was a main highlight of his career. “Being recognized for my talents and getting flown overseas to perform for a packed, sold out venue was life changing. The experience really made me feel like I am here for a reason.” He is planning a European tour this year in support of his project More Merch.
So Melo made it to the UK, but we in Seattle are thirsty for more of the Brooklyn sound. Melo has never been here, but I am sure we will not disappoint each other. At the end I asked him to tell me something about himself that I wouldn’t think of asking and he said:” I’m a vegetarian, I love women, and I can solve a Rubik’s Cube in 3 minutes.” And he resides in Brooklyn? I’m officially smitten, what is there not to love.
