She sings her first notes and you know that she belongs among the greats. Cool on the surface but fiery underneath, Melanie's deep, pure voice could melt what is left of the arctic ice cap.
Surprisingly enough for a young singer in her early thirties, she already has a grainy quality to her voice, a fine patina. But a type of voice only refers to a type of singer. Melanie De Biasio does not confine herself to singing jazz standards. She is a complete musician and already an accomplished artist. She writes nearly all the lyrics and music of her songs, such as the wonderful Convictions.
Surrounded by outstanding musicians, she dares everything: slow tempi, groove, tricky arrangements, all with complete aplomb (Let Me Love You, A Stomach Is Burning,). Apart from her beautiful original compositions, her version of Gershwin's My Man's Gone Now is simply phenomenal: pure and totally denuded of superfluous details, the sadness of the song comes out magnified.
She was born for the stage. Vocal jazz existed long before Melanie De Biasio, but you can hardly find similar originality and talent except in the case of the American Patricia Barber, whom she sometimes resembles, or the Korean Youn Sun Nah. When those singers whisper, the audience falls silent. Melanie's charm produces the same magic.
You might have imagined Melanie De Biasio captivating a jazz club audience rather than a whole theatre. But on stage she goes wild and is simply stunning, her singing being over and above all expectations."
