MC MANPARRISS BIOGRAPHY

Its 1988, football violence is at a all time high , pure cheese in the clubs and pubs , fights are happening nightly and unemployment was rife , car cassette players was the new currency get the picture

I was a doorman and dj in a busy pub in Coventry called The Three Tunns , and various other venues in Coventry playing from reggae to hiphop but still limited to what you could play, I also was a mobile dj usual stuff weddings , birthday parties, and my own night at a pub called The Sir Colin Cambell a proper student place in Coventry , I could play what I wanted so the place was heaven in my eyes, Steep stairs led you to the room which was a nice size held about 150 people , once I set up , all my crew would be there, plus a crowd who never danced to anything but rave music, I only had 10 good rave tracks the rest was hip house, de la soul Eric b etc, So week after week I bought more rave tracks than my other usual tracks I would purchase, thinking this fad wont last long , but I was wrong, because week after week the venue was getting packed , and I had a following for the few rave tracks what was about at the time, I never had a clue about mixing records so I use to mc between mixes to keep the momentum up.

Now this new phenonimum was hitting the nation hard, tunes from Manchester, America, Belgium, and Germany where the tracks to get, I was attracting all the football cru, and Coventry doorman, and just lads and girls who I called the town cru.

The Coventry Legion was the firm of Coventry football club (the heavy mob) so being a doorman/dj I knew most of them, and got on with most of them. I was approached by Neville(loud n nasty) nevs brother Kieran and best pal Bam Bam who were doormen as well, They approached me to arrange an illegal rave using my equipment, my tunes, my voice, sounded ok to me, so it went on at a old warehouse in Coventry Canal road industrial estate, The lads broke the padlock and bought another one so if the cops came we could say we had permission and show them the key, they werent much to organise we had music, lights, beer etc which was sold through an ice cream van we had parked in the venue, a industrial heater which ran on petrol, a generator and a smoke machine(filled with poppers) to go with the strobelights and few hundred flyers with a info line,

We had one person answering the phone, letting people know where to meet, the Three Tunns car park was one and the Tally Ho pub was another ending up with a road block both being city centre pubs, Waiting for the all important call naming the venue, word and mouth kept it underground away from the feds, when the venue was named it was one big dash of cars mad for it

With everyone rammed in the police had no chance of stopping it, music started everyone happy as Larry we asked for donations from each raver who was glad to part with a few pounds, I remember one time the petrol running out on the generator and heater so we had to get some quick, but the funny thing that night was the ice cream van, While we waited for much needed fuel the ice cream van started to sound its jingle , Soon as the jingle sounded off the crowd went mental so it went on for about half hour, then the fuel arrived, more djs like Dobbo, Doc Scott, Keith Suckling arrived anyway thats how I became the voice for amnesia house of which I am a partner with, I still mc and dj to this day, I also lecture now at university.peace!

When I started rave mcing the music was that good and had loads to say that mc's in the early 90's didn’t have to say too much so we enhanced the music and the dj's, im saying this because their is some young ravers who don’t know the history and bad mouth the original mc's who respected the music and the dj and thought it rude to say the least to chat over a wicked tune or set, the way I see it we had a agreement with the dj that we don’t take the limelight or the piss if the record them dayz needed a rap over the top off the tune the artist would have put it in, the scene is a different element now, so to all them critics who just come out and from wearing nappies putting us oldskool mc's down do me a favour and take a look back to the glory dayz when rave was rave, as any oldskool dj or mc if asked if they could go back to them dayz they would all say yes, now ive got that off my chest I would like to big up some off the dj's and mc's who paved the way for the future who took risk to play in a run down warehouses who got records confiscated or involved in car crashes prison terms for drugs or even lost there life I salute you all, we did the hard work while the nappy boyz enjoy the easy life.nuff sed!
