Mariachi Mujer 2000 has paved the road for a unique expression of mariachi music for the new millennium. Unlike other high profile all-female mariachi groups, Mariachi Mujer 2000 is lead and musically directed by women. This group, based in Los Angeles, California, is motivated by the desire to demonstrate that women in mariachi music can successfully arrange and perform some of the most challenging mariachi selections. Perhaps most notable about Mariachi Mujer 2000 is that its membership is composed of well recognized and experienced mariachi musicians. The group's director, Marisa Orduño, is an experienced and accomplished musician. Her love and passion for music has given her the strength and ability to establish a new promising show group and, in addition, has lead Mujer 2000 to great accomplishments and admirable success. Additionally, the musical director, Laura Sobrino, has earned international recognition as a female pioneer in the history of mariachi and was recently honored as an inductee to the Tucson International Mariachi Conference Hall of Fame in 2004. Mariachi Mujer 2000 has shared the stage with some of the greatest mariachi artists in the world such as Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, Mariachi México de Pépe Villa, Mariachi Cobre, Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano, and many more. They have also performed with some of Mexico's most celebrated performers such as Heréncia Mexicana, sons and daughters of legendary Mexican singers, Pedro Infante, Javier Solis, José Alfredo Jiménez, Juan Zaízar, Juan Mendoza "El Tariácuri" and Lola Beltrán. They have shared the stage with Vicki Carr, Pablo Montero, Gerardito Fernandez and the "reína" of ranchera singers, Aída Cuevas, now officially Mujer 2000's godmother. At the Hollywood Bowl they performed with some of the greatest artists in Latin jazz and salsa music, such as Eddie Palmieri, the Tito Puente All-Star Orchestra, El Grán Combo, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Fánia All-Stars, Poncho Sánchez. The show gave the group invaluable experience working with producer Ralph Mercado. The versatility of this group is extraordinary! The women in this show group are highly skilled vocalists and instrumentalists who have been personally selected from across the nation. The group's educational background ranges from currently enrolled university students to educators who hold bachelor's degrees and multiple educational credentials. Recent additions to the group include Nydia Rojas Bocanegra, a well recognized and accomplished Latin artist, as well as another Mariachi Hall of Fame inductee, Rebecca Gonzales. In addition to mariachi music performance, many of the members of Mujer 2000 play other musical genres, such as classical, jazz, Latin jazz, pop, country and salsa. Mariachi Mujer 2000 achieved their next level of professional accomplishment when they performed to an international audience at their debut performance in Guadalajara, Mexico. In September 2004, the group was invited for the 11th Annual Encuentro Internacional de Mariachi y Charrería, playing at the prestigious Teatro Degollado. Mariachi Mujer 2000 did not only receive a full house standing ovation, but more importantly received personal congratulations from the legendary Maestro Ruben Fuentes, phenomenal arranger and owner of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. With the advent of the new millennium, Mariachi Mujer 2000 is continuing to set new standards in Mariachi music.
