Marcata Recording was first started by The Walkmen in 2000 as a purely analog facility. Inside those walls they recorded, and/or mixed most, if not all of their releases up to 2007, along with many a record by friends, and peers alike. But since we continuously trashed the place, and blasted out the neighbors . the progressive and patronly Columbia University, who owned the building, and a growing amount of Harlem, finally kicked us out. which was good for us since noone really wanted to have a studio anymore.

Marcata Recording today is a production company within, but not limited to any one studio though we are in residence in a great old barn that I have been able to slowly turn into a madd maxx version of the great old studios from a time when record jackets were still amazing to look at, and hold while listening.

I would be happy to get the lads to take a break from touring and come up here to help decorate the place with knots of cables, but they are not done refining their prototype for a duct tape trailor, and book writing, so sadly, until then, it is just me and the crickets in all this space,

Kevin McMahon

who is.

I came on board in 2003 and took over daily operations and engineering duties, bringing in a collection of vintage mics, and preamps, and a long history with what makes a great live performance from the decade of work as the chief soundman/designer at the now defunkt but not forgotten Brownies, Northsix, Thread Waxing Space, Warsaw, and other venues that churned out so many great bands over the years. in addition to doing ANYTHING HUMANLY POSSIBLE to do more than elevate the most talentless acts to a heightened state of mediocrity and mass appeal that most good american idols have always hoped to attain, I also use this sometimes leaky umbrella to shill my technical repair services which I learned from notable techs in the industry ranging from Jeff Blenkinsopp who had worked as keyboard tech for Pink Floyd forever and transformed The Secret Machines into the band we loved to see, and hear live, to Ken Mckimm, and Chris Muth, and Burt Price, three industry standards in studio design, installation, and maintenance who have had a major hand in about every major studio on the eastern seaboard.

the old Marcata -Harlem was built inside an old Nashcar production facility, and had a very distinctive sound which I am pleased to say I have been able to replicate. and way more. in this new location along with a 2nd live room, offering two distinct choices of room sounds. In addition to this studio, I maintain a number of other great studios which I can get at great prices throughout the tri state area.

Marcata Recording is a concept more than a place, that specializes in old school techniques, gear, and huge reverberant spaces mixed with a working knowledge of performance, modern/digital technology, and production.

what the hell is production anyway? well, as it turns out, if you ask almost anyone and try to get a straight answer, I'd say noone really knows. I mean, who really does that says they do? I try to nurture great performances from bands, as much as I will tell you when you are sucking!

In my new location, as when in harlem, bands will encounter a fucking mess. er, I mean a large stimulating atmosphere that is comfortably chaotic, with a huge collection of great instruments, amps, and some strange broken toys, and a lot of crap. you really can't make a record without some of that. well, except that i hear from reputable sources that you cannot even make a record using pro tools. which for the record. I think is bullshit. digital or analog.? I'll use a shoe horn if I have to though I know tape is amazing. but I have both!!! sweetest.

Come up and help me move some shit out of the way to get to some great amp under a pile of console parts, and make a record you will be proud of in fifty years. even if your kids didn't listen to it till they were all grown up and not embarassed to admit they knew you anymore. www.marcata.net
