Some people like to reveal themselves to the public by simply posing for the cameras with a forced smile. Not Andy Kayes, he'd rather stay in the shadows and study individuals in the crowd, whether it be in a busy street, down a gloomy cul-de-sac, or on public transport. He studies people's habits, gestures and hopes. He likes to work out why they act the way they do, what makes them smile or what makes them tired of life. Gripping his pen, hidden in the mist, he is that faceless silhouette able to leap from one life to another with each new verse. Perhaps in order to analyse, surely to understand, he uses the distance between himself and the others to take a step back and put himself in their shoes without judging them.
From his appearances in the French underground scene to his free mini-album released in 2006, Andy Kayes first appeared as Manimal, performing both in English and French. He gradually withdrew from the glare of the spotlight to turn observations into verse. Andy doesn't really have one identity: he is a mixture of you, me, the forgotten kid at the back of the classroom, the angry demonstrator, the lonely child, or the office employee lost in the morning crowds.
With his dual nationality English/French, Andy is as much a fan of the French independent scene as he is of the untamed MF Doom or Mr Lif. He has to combine all this on an album which should at last bring out his individuality in the middle of an industry which is forever changing.
