Born in Lisbon in 1976, Luís Costa formed his first band, Sunbeams, when he was seventeen, influenced by bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. However, his love for the drumkit made him quit being a frontman and started playing drums. Four years later, he founded Madcab with Luís Azevedo Silva, who released their first album in 2008 on the (also) Portuguese netlabel Lástima with great success. He also formed Syn-er-gy in 2005 with Hugo Raposo, who collaborated with Costa online. In 2009, he contributed to the debut EP of one of the Portuguese most promising bands of the turn of the decade, You Can’t Win Charlie Brown, and lately he’s been working with the online band The V-Men, who released their first single in September.
Between all those moments, Luís Costa started his own solo career, going back to playing guitar and writing his own songs. 2006 saw the release of “Imperfeições” and “All Those Different Colors”, followed by two more releases in 2007: “…So Said the Mute” and “Short Fleeting Moods”, collaborating with Paula Petreca, a Brazilian ballerina who added video to Costa’s songs. He also made the Novos Talentos Fnac 2008 compilation, promoted by a well known French media retailer, writing a brand new song for it, “Punk Rock”.
In 2010, Luís Costa returns with his first EP in three years: “Layered”, a six piece recording that Cakes and Tapes will proudly release this Fall.
