Born in Greenwich Maritime, London, it was always certain that Lucy Lawrence was pre-destined for something more than those around her. As a child she was a talented ballet dancer, tap dancer and also a child actor on the amateur scene, but where her real passion lay was in music.
Growing up Lucy idolised Michael Jackson (she was born the same year that Jackson's iconic 'Thriller' album was released), Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Prince, Madonna and Kylie. At the age of 10 Lucy attended Michael Jackson's 'Dangerous' World Tour. This was Lucy's flashbulb moment, seeing her idol live on stage set off fireworks in her head. She too was born to do music and to be a star!
Lucy threw herself into music and from then on the rest is history. At the tender age of 12 Lucy won her first song writing competition, this was followed by her landing the lead role in her schools production of 'Grease' and ever ambitious, Lucy then went on to form the girl group Replay. They were quickly taken under management and featured in local newspapers, radio and played the festival circuit and travelled to New York to work with the same producers and song writers as Destiny's Child. Later the group split, and Lucy and one other member continued to perform as a duo, performing to sell-out crowds across London at the height of the UK Garage scene, and also did a tour of London nightclubs.
Lucy star always shined brighter however, and she eventually made the painful yet necessary decision to go it solo. Acting on a tip from the Spice Girls who were discovered by the top agency The Stage, Lucy also began chasing auditions and it wasn't long before she herself was the one being chased, by labels begging for her to join their girl groups. Staying true to her dreams Lucy turned down these offers, believing firmly in her talent as a solo artist. At a modelling casting Lucy was singing acapella to herself whilst waiting her turn and impressed the casting director, who overheard, so much that he got on the phone to his friend Mark Morrison of 'Return of the Mack' fame. Eager to meet Lucy Mark arranged a meeting and was blown away with what he heard; taking Lucy straight to his publishing company Perfect Songs/ZTT Records and signing her on the spot. At just 19 Lucy Lawrence had arrived.
Lucy went on to work with all the movers and shaker of the UK Garage scene , including Sunship, Craig David's songwriter & producer team, Mark Hill, Floetry, the boy band Blue and songwriter Ray Ruffin. Lucy began travelling back and forth to Philadelphia over the next 4 years song writing and producing, which is no mean feat in the notoriously hard to crack US market. She signed a production deal with 'NoizeTrip' based in Philadelphia and worked with the songwriter of the team 'Jean Baptiste' who was close friends with Will.i.am. Enamoured of Lucy's talent and drive he introduced him to Lucy in 2003, during Christina Aguilera's UK tour. Their rapport and mutual respect was instantaneous and culminated in the recording of a duet; the song 'Dirty Dancing' for the film 'Dirty Dancing 2 Havana nights' soundtrack, where Lucy was honoured to be sharing an album with artists like Christina Aguilera, Wyclef Jean and Mya. This was released 2004 in the US and Will became Lucy's mentor for the project and a lasting friendship was born. It was also during this time that, whilst recording at the famous Larry Gold Studio in Philadelphia, (home to many of the great artists such as Jill Scott and Eve to emerge out of 'Phillly') that Lucy cemented her long lasting friendship with the legendary band The Roots. She would hang in The Roots' studio and observe them in their recording and mixing process and in return they began to pop into NoizeTrip's studio and listen to Lucy's demos giving her the recognition and encouragement she needed to stick to her guns and stay true to her dream. Band member Black Thought still acts as Lucy's mentor.
At a dinner for Timbaland and his crew whom Lucy met in Philadelphia with Justin Timberlake, she persuaded them to listen to her demos. Both loved what they heard and wanted to sign Lucy immediately but she was already signed and contractually bound.
Lucy's deal with NoizeTrip ended when they themselves parted separate ways. Songwriter 'Jean Baptiste' went on to sign with Will.i.am and has written Chris Brown's 'Beautiful People', as well as tracks for the B.E.P album 'The End', Kelis' album 'Flesh Tones', and songs for Kid Cudi.
Working with her client base, and producing for developing artists as well as herself, Lucy is now undertaking a new journey of self-exploration, and finding a whole new sound that is hers, and hers alone. At present, Lucy continues to sing, write and produces and also runs her own record label with her Mom, based in Canary Wharf, her career is now being guided by a new manager: Mike Segall.
Lucy currently works with and produces for, several emerging new artists and has just become the only UK face and representative of Apogee Electronics. Apogee are the world's top company in the provision of elite digital audio recording equipment, and artists such as Usher, Jay-Z and Rihanna have recently used Apogee's equipment for recording, mixing and mastering their top ten hits. Apogee recently flew Lucy out to L.A. where she made many industry contacts whom she hopes will bring exciting prospects to her future career in the music industry.
The moniker 'Brit Chick' started as a nickname given to Lucy by her loyal fans, it is now her trademark.
Lucy has released a vocal house track "Sun Go Down" - written and produced by her herself. It was remixed by Greg Stainer and is currently available on iTunes. The track has been played in world famous clubs; Ministry of Sound, Pacha in London, Zinc Bar in Dubai, plus in Ibiza and at the Miami Winter Music Conference. "This Place" a track which features vocals by Lucy Lawrence for 'Mooli Music' is also available on iTunes on the Mooli EP.
Up next for Lucy will be a return to the live circuit in London and around the U.K, and she is in the process of negotiating some major potential deals, Ministry of Sound's record label being one of those whose interest she has attracted.
