The composer from RJ, Lourdes Ábido, started to have musical lessons at twelve, doing classical piano with teacher Chiquita França, in Niteroi. When she was fifteen she started to study the guitar with Egberto Gismonti in Nova Friburgo, where she lived for twenty years. Still in Friburgo, she participated in Metrônomo 1, a 1967 show with musical supervision and arrangements by Egberto Gismonti. It was from there, from that latent and creative bud that she began to compose, soon hinting as to what would come in the future, when at sixteen she composed: “…Violeiro, espero a sorte. Guerrilheiro, meu santo é forte, coração aberto, canto contra a morte.”.

Poet and composer, Lourdes Ábido, obtained her degree in Portuguese and French Language and Literature in the Faculdade de Filosofia Santa Dorotéia, in Nova Friburgo, doing a one month summer phonetics course in the Sorbonne, during the twelve months she lived in Paris. Afterwards, once settled in Rio de Janeiro, she had music lessons at Cigam, Musiarte, with several teachers, finally settling for guitar and harmony with Célia Vaz, conductor, composer and singer, well known by all artists.

An acknowledged admirer of Baden Powell, Egberto Gismonti, Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque,Caetano Veloso, Moacir Santos, João Gilberto,Edu Lobo, Paulinho da Viola, Nelson Cavaquinho, Francis Hime, Guinga, Piazzolla, Dorival Caymmy, Zé Miguel Wisnik, João Bosco, Lourdes, who was classified in the 6th Visa Composers’ Prize, shows herself again to be a “respectable warrior”, as she returns, twenty years later, to the composers’ lair, by cutting her authorial CD: “golfinho/gaivota”. According to Lourdes: “I chose to make an independent CD because I achieved musical maturity outside the milieu of commercial production, marked by strict rules of conviviality and activities related to the said market”.

Lourdes Ábido’s main song-writer partners is the poet and journalist Reynaldo Jardim, one of the exponents of Movimento Neoconcreto. And like this aesthetic movement, Lourdes’ music celebrates the difficult marriage between life and art –– form and substance in equilibrium.
