WALKING WITH GIANTS: DANNY "DIZZY INFERNOS" MANUEL

Bigger than life is a phrase that's thrown around, many times on the wrong people in our fast-food, instant, pop-star culture. In the case of Danny "Dizzy Infernos" Manuel, it's a true understatement. Danny was a giant in every way. When he stepped into a room, you couldn't help but take notice. He was a mountain of a man that commanded attention and respect without the obvious tricks of someone trying too hard to impress. He could be silent and almost still as stone at times and then instantly warm with a genuine smile that took away any apprehension in anybody in his gaze. At times, Danny could take over the room without using up all the oxygen. It was a low and slow burn of a party baby, and you were invited.

In his short time with us, Danny "stomped the terra firma." As a musician, Danny's bass playing had a subtle and rock solid undercurrent that glued the music together without any pretentiousness and overbearing glitz. He played for many years as a touring musician and recording artist with Los Infernos and commanded respect from a cross section of the underground's legends of the day. Later, with Genghis Con Job, he was able to step into a new pair of boots and tear it up with the same level of intensity and still never lose the primal and steady rhythms that were his hallmark and iron-fist of a stamp in his trade.

Like many real musicians, Danny had a bread and butter gig to support his true love, hard, rock & roll music. He spent his nights getting those with a song in their heart to let it all hang out. As a KJ, Danny brought that cool party atmosphere with him that drew even the most timid of folks up to the mike, sometimes for the first time in their lives. He was the kind of real deal, laid back entertainer that let anybody and everybody in on the fun. That was his kind of party; no red-velvet rope included.

Like the rest of us, "Dizzy" had his faults. But, unlike a great many people, he was the first to admit when he had crossed the line, and he had the stitches, bruises and scars to prove it. Danny usually wouldn't start any trouble, but he was the first to finish it, and you'd never have to worry about him backing your play, especially when you were in the right. He had a fearlessness about him that reached out to others but maybe didn't look back within himself hard enough. We wouldn't get so melodramatic to say it was somehow heroic. Maybe he just had that little bit of dark tragedy found in the greats that knew this life wasn't going to be a long trek, so it was time to get it on while he could.

Danny left this world today, but he leaves it with many of us that will hold dear memories of this modern day giant.
