Levi Massie is a young man with a sense of destiny. Using his unique gift for melding the right words with the right music he creates songs that stay with the listener long after the music stops playing. Pairing hummable melodies with words that are at once optimistic but also deeply rooted in the realities of the world, Massie’s songs convey messages of hope, love, and compassion.
Massie grew up in Ohio where he began playing guitar at age sixteen. He went on to earn an associates degree in audio engineering from the International College of Broadcasting in Dayton. After college his interest in songwriting intensified and he immersed himself in the work of Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Tom Waits, and Hank Williams. In fact Massie considers Williams’ “Men With Broken Hearts” to be one of the best songs ever written. In November 2005 he moved to Nashville to follow the next step of his musical path. He spent the next two years as a furniture salesman but never lost focus on his music. He kept writing songs, playing open mic nights, and networking. He began working with highly respected session drummer and producer Peter Young (Loretta Lynn, Ricky Van Shelton, Chely Wright).
Persistence and focus have begun to pay off for Massie. In the past year he has played shows at 3rd and Lindsley, The French Quarter Cafe, The Bluebird Caf, and most notably, at the historic Bitter End in Greenwich Village as part of the New York Singer/Songwriter Sessions hosted by session musician Larry Oakes. In Spring 2007, with the help of Peter Young, Massie released his first EP, a set of his representative ballads with sparse acoustic accompaniment. In September of 2010, his much anticipated debut record will be released on Mid10 records, a new and hip indie label in Nashville. Among the highlights of the record, Levi was able to record with Nashville legend Charlie McCoy, who has played on everything from Dylan, to Cash, to Van Zandt.
With his career poised to climb to the next level Massie is grateful but not surprised. When asked about his confidence in his music he replies, “I know this is what I was meant to do."
