Lennox Dread, born Lennox Lindsay of an Afro-Trinidadian father and an Indo-Trinidadian mother. He grew up in the low-income working-class neighbourhood of Nelson Street in Port of Spain, the capital city of the twin island Caribbean state of Trinidad and Tobago. Nelson Street had a bad reputation -- Lennox remembers clearly as a child witnessing numerous street fights between individuals, gangs, and between hoards of riot police and gang members. The neighbourhood teemed with "badjohns", the name typically given to the truants and rude boys of the area. Teenage pregnancy and drug abuse were serious problems that afflicted the area. Many a youth dropped out of school at an early age to follow the path of delinquency.many died early deaths because of gang-related crimes and drug abuse, mainly due to crack cocaine. Protected from the inherent dangers of such an environment by an authoritarian father -a police officer reputed nationally for his implacable application of the law- who imposed military-like discipline on his seven children, and forbade any contact with the neighbourhood kids, (any infringement of this rule being dealt with a harsh thrashing), Lennox attended an elite high school thanks to an entrance policy based on academic merit and not social status.
He was given a scholarship to study in France and graduated from the University of Lyons with a Master's Degree in French language and literature, as well as a BSc. Degree in Social and Economic Administration and a BA Degree in English. After his stay in France, he returned to Trinidad in 1978 where he worked for one year as a French teacher, and then worked in the diplomatic service of his government for two years. He returned to France in 1981 where, parallel to his teaching activities, he became actively involved in the reggae movement then struck with tragedy at the sudden passing away of the late and great Bob Marley. He was the first DJ to host a reggae program on a local radio in the town of Lyons, France. He was also the pioneer of the Sound System experience in the early eighties, when his Sound System crew by the name of Lennox Dread Sound System blasted out the latest Jamaican reggae sounds to a mesmerized Lyon public, being confronted for the first time with such a musical experience. His Sound System drew large crowds and contributed to his reputation as a DJ. From DJ he went to Sing-jay and his group Lennox and Lion Dread became in no time the reggae group of reference in Lyons and the South-West of France. He performed with many big reggae stars such as Dillinger, the Mighty Diamonds, Max Romeo. He also became resident MC in the humongous discotheque of the Xyphos in Lyons, where for years he toasted reggae airs to techno sounds. The Xyphos is a high-tech discotheque, 30 kilos of sound, and a crowd capacity of 3000 people!
He left Lyon in 1991 to return to the mother-land of Africa, specifically in Burkina Faso. There he created the group the One Love Band, and brought live reggae to a country where economic strife hampers considerably the organisation of live shows. Reggae, as he says, is more than just music. It's a life experience with a spiritual and mystical facette. Lennox has never stopped performing.
After five years in Burkina, he left for the USA where he spent four years in Washington DC, and produced his first album: C'est la Vie.
He went back to Burkina Faso in 2000, and released his second album: Many Miles. This album was produced by the Recording Company, Seydoni Production, a Burkinabe company that has pioneered world-class record production in Burkina Faso. Lennox Dread is currently in Burkina Faso, where he is pursuing his musical experience. One Love.
