Contrasting their blatant power with simple yet earthquake style beats,
and their loud yet educated glass shattering northern mouths, Last Man
Down take you on a cross-country drive through personal triumph, broken
down towns and broken down hearts with their beautifully uncompromising
hand crafted masterpieces.
The Cheshire based four-piece consists of Mike (Vocals/Guitar), the
brothers: Alex (Vocals/Bass) and Ash (Vocals/Drums), and Matt
(Vocals/Guitar). Mike, Alex, and Ash had been close friends for years,
making music together in an old bust up church they converted in to the
LMD head quarters, eventually drafting in Matt 'The Glasses' Martin from
the nearby town of Stoke-on-Trent to finalise the LMD army. These
tunnel-visioned troopers have spent the last two years breaking their
backs and their bank balances out on the road, developing their own
sound like a rubber ball bouncing between rock, punk and beats, and
building a well deserved reputation as a hard-working band.
Debut single, "Killing Time" is totally guaranteed to keep people nailed
to the wall with its escapist wailing, managing to separate the masses
and then bring them back together, like a drink down the pub after a
fight at a wedding. With its infectious beats courtesy of Ash Rowe, and
tuning fork bending vocals from Mike Richardson, "Killing Time" tells
the tale of hometown grey - a cocktail of contempt, passion, sorrow, and
empathy. Lyrics hit the jugular of today's lost generation, "What's it
like to run in circles? / What's it like to feel worthless?", until the
saga closes with the "runaway" screams of Matt, echoing thoughts of a
young protagonist, before the screams are silenced.
There's something different about the sound of this band, though the pop
sensibilities of songs like "Just Stay Home" become obviously apparent,
with a chorus you'll be singing for weeks, forged with the gravely yet
consumable voice of co-frontman Alex, there's a little something extra
that manages to arrest the ears and hold you captive. Drawing influences
from so many different genres has left Last Man Down very difficult to
categorise - 'one of the few bands that sound like no one else, just
hanging out with somebody else, but they don't get on very well!'
Debut single, "Killing Time" is available from Itunes on Karate Kid Records.
