La Charanga Moderna was founded at Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico in the year 2006 by percussionist Pedro Gonzalez, singer Johnny Aponte, violinist Cesar Díaz and flutist and sax player Reinaldo Castellanos. It was created with the purpose of adding new possibilities to the already enriched musical scene of the island. This charanga orchestra cultivates a variety of musical genres such as: salsa, cha cha cha, latin jazz, bolero, danzon, danza, bomba, plena and many more. The Moderna has had the honor of playing in some of the most important latin clubs of Puerto Rico such as : Nuyorican Cafe, La Rumba, El Balcon del Zumbador, Mijani Club, Carly's Sport Bar, Birimbao Club and NCO Club among others. At this time the ensemble is working on the music that will be part of its first recording. La Charanga Moderna perform every Thursday starting at 8:30pm in Mijani's Club at La Placita de Santurce in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
