Vilhelm Herold - Miserere - 1903 - Edison Standard B - Video
PUBLISHED:  Apr 20, 2011
DESCRIPTION:
Danish tenor Vilhelm Herold (1865-1937) singing "Miserere" from Verdi's opera "Il trovatore" - recorded in Copenhagen, November 1903.

Herold was the leading tenor on the Royal Danish Theatre from mid-1890's until his retirement in 1915. He performed not only in Denmark, but also had great success at Covent Garden in London.

He was one of the first to make records in Denmark - his earliest were made by Berliner in December 1899. After these recordings nearly four years went, before he recorded again. This time for "Dansk Fonograf Magasin" (The Danish Phonograph Store), in November 1903 he made 10 recordings which today are among his rarest.

From 1904 to 1914 he made hundreds of records for "The Gramophone Company" (G&T, HMV), many of these became "best-sellers" of their time.

This cylinder is being played on an Edison Standard B phonograph made in 1907. It has the 2 and 4-minute gearing attached, as seen in the video. The "witches hat" horn is an exact copy as the one originally sold with the phonograph.
