"The Breaks" is a critically acclaimed 1980 hit single by Kurtis Blow from his self-titled debut album. It was one of the earliest hip-hop hits, peaking at #87 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, #4 on the R&B charts, and #9 on the Dance Charts. In 2008, "The Breaks" was ranked #10 on VH1's 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs. Kurtis Walker (born August 9, 1959), better known by his stage name Kurtis Blow, is an American rapper and record producer. He is one of the first commercially successful rappers and the first to sign with a major record label. "The Breaks" was the first certified gold record rap song. Blow was born in Harlem in New York City, and got his public start in 1972 as a B-boy and a DJ under the stage name of Kool DJ Kurt. Besides his own work, Blow has been responsible for producing hits for The Fat Boys, Run-DMC, Full Force, René & Angela and Wyclef Jean. Deeply committed to Christianity, Blow attended ministry classes at Nyack College. As founder of The Hip-Hop Church, Blow serves as rapper, DJ, worship leader and minister. He became an ordained minister on August 16, 2009. There are several hip-hop churches in the US, and he is involved with many of them.
