"This song (and They's "Mr. Johnson") were originally songs from my hippie band, Purple Sunshine. I was really into hippies and LSD, and tuning in and dropping out, and all that stuff, so we started this other band. But it had no sense of humor. I made demos of the stuff with Kramer, and we had run out of material, so Kramer went through the tape, saying "What about this song? What about this song?" and finally we decided to re-record "Open," because it was easy for everyone to learn off the tape, and we figured it would be slow nd long and psychedelic. It's slow and long, anyway."
