Rock 'n' Roll Will Never Die

By Brian J. Murphy

Music, as with many forms of art is cyclical. What was in yesterday may not be in tomorrow, but what was in ten years ago may come full circle to present day. Rock music has been able to maintain a steady grip on the industry for the past few years by putting out fresh new acts with true talent. This trend will continue its growth thanks in part to Kim Kline, whose new self titled CD, breathes incredible life into a genre already full of rich history.

The Gram, Texas born beauty has a set of pipes that will bring back the nostalgic days of Pat Benatar, Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles. It is not coincidence that these are the very artist that have influenced Kline throughout her career. “My mother loved music and it was a passion of hers, I started singing Classic Rock & Roll at five years old.” states Kline. Other influences of Kline are Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton and even some soul by Aretha Franklin and Patti Labelle.

Kline, who comes from a divorced family has gone through quite a bit in her life. Several years ago her mother almost succumbed to a heart attack and an aneurism, but was able to pull through. She also lost her Grandmother and Grandfather at an early age. These tragic events, along with being raised in a town with a population of less than 10,000 has served as a catalyst for Kline to become a great song writer. She writes 100% of her lyrics and arranges some of her songs as well.

One thing that stands out about Kline is the marvelous job that her team does. She has outstanding people around her and it really shows. Her marketing is second to none for an artist that is not signed to a major label and her P.R. is top shelf. Even more impressive is Kline’s business sense. She did not come out to Los Angeles with the naivete of a young songstress. Her goal is to build a fan base and an underground following, so that when she does ‘make it big’ she has built up a foundation that can last forever. She also has a great sense of how the industry works, and realizes that getting signed to a major label is not the end all be all for an artist as it once was. Utilizing technology such as the internet has allowed Kline to reach a significant amount of people that may not have been possible just a few years ago. “I want to have longevity, I want to establish a fan base that will be there with or without a record deal” states Kline.

Upon listening to her Album this should not be a problem, for this singer is well on her way to making an impact in a stagnant market. She has already headlined at the Roxy and to a crowd of 2000 people at the Grove in Los Angeles. She also frequently plays at the Viper Room in Hollywood.

As we look back and remember the classic songs that made us feel good, we now have a new diva to thank for bringing back that solid Rock music that served as a soundtrack to many of our childhoods. Kline says “I just want to play good old fashioned, classic Rock and Roll.” Her album “Kim Kline” is just that and a little bit more.

About Me:

Surfacing from the small-town Texas pageant circuit and finding her way to the wilds of Hollywood’s Viper Room, Kim Kline is an all-American paradox: a sheer blast of piss and vinegar wrapped in a sugar-sweet package. A singer/songwriter in the vein of Tom Petty with the rock-and-roll sensibility of Pat Benatar fused with Lita Ford, Ms. Kline has set out to remind the music industry of its greatest strength – kick-ass musicians who write their own material. Inspired by her mother’s love of classic rock, Kim was raised on a regular diet of Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, ZZ Top, AC/DC. When most toddlers were cutting their teeth on Sesame Street, Kim was ascending Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven. Growing up, Kim has known her fair share of hard knocks and unexpected tragedy, and she harnesses the power of that narrative in her songwriting. Honesty and raw emotion are the cornerstones of her artistry and they bleed into each of her songs.

Her self-titled debut, which has been trumpeted in the media as showcasing “the makings of a true rock superstar,” features some trenchant, hard-hitting material. “Sick Reality” is a vitriolic confrontation of a relationship built on duplicity; its angry guitar riffs a rebuff to anyone who’d consider doing her harm. On the other end of the spectrum, “Hush Lullaby” features a softer edge and deals with the pain of losing a piece of your family, and the myriad emotions that accompany that loss. Ms. Kline isn’t accustomed to sitting down with the intent of writing music, preferring to scribble down lyrics on a napkin in LAX while waiting to board a flight back to Texas. Rather than pick up the phone to bitch to a friend when a mood overtakes her, she hums melodies to herself. This impulse to write music spontaneously, trusting her gut, accounts for the visceral T.K.O.s the album delivers time after time. However, the true litmus test of an artist is how well their music translates to live performance. And in this regard, Ms. Kline has few peers. Her audiences are treated to the blood, sweat and tears of a true performer who relishes the opportunity to connect with her fans. Crowds are left rapt at the increasingly rare spectacle of a woman, makeup falling to the wayside by the end of the evening, wearing her emotions on her sleeve.
