Being raised on a healthy diet of ‘Airwolf’, ‘Teen Wolf’, and ‘Who’s the Boss?’ has paid off for songwriter/comedian Kevin Sage. His latest parody of the song “Bedrock” by Young Money & Lloyd takes listeners back to the Golden Years when “The 1980’s Rocked.” With over 130 references to 80’s pop culture, Sage’s creation is truly the ultimate 80’s tribute song.

The digital single and music video were both released in November 2010, and “Children of the 80’s” around the world sent it viral. “When I wrote the song, I tried really hard to include a little something for everyone. I grew up in the 80’s so they are my first memories. Others were in high school and college. And then there were all those people doing coke!” laughs Sage. “Several generations shared that decade and most of us remember it fondly.”

But “The 1980’s Rocked” isn’t Sage’s first brush with viral. His YouTube channel has garnered over 10 million views, most notably his parody of James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful.” The Boston Globe first wrote about Sage’s version along with Weird Al Yankovic. “Being mentioned in the same article as my greatest musical influence was an honor. Weird Al is the undisputed King of Parodies and he is the reason I do parodies today,” remarks Sage. “My new parodies are a little different though. It’s like if a parody and a cover song hooked up one night and nine months later I’m what pops out.”

Besides his parodies, Sage’s original songs reflect that same brand of humor. “It’s funny, I’ll set out to write a serious song and just before I get to the chorus, the verse will take a sharp turn at Crazy Street and it’s all downhill from there.” With songs about a womanizer who won’t change his “Whiskey Ways,” another about a guy who wants to go “Back in Time” to avoid marrying his current wife, and one called “If You Can’t Dance, Then You Can’t Screw,” Sage weaves hilarious stories into foot-stomping, knee-slapping songs. Some are a bit pop/rock with heavy piano, and others have a definite country flair with Sage on guitar. ”I love storytellers and country music has some of the best. Artists like Brad Paisley, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood and Reba McEntire. That’s part of why I love living in Nashville. I guess most of my stories just get a little twisted on the way out!”

Right now, Sage is enjoying the 80’s once again with the success of his latest parody, “The 1980’s Rocked,” which can be seen on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/vinsage. For information about Kevin Sage, visit http://www.kevinsage.com or email him at kevin@kevinsage.com.
