I grew up in the suburbs in North Carolina playing sports and skipping school. In high school, captivated by the progressive rock band Rush, I started playing drums, bass and eventually guitar. In 1990, I went to UNC-Chapel Hill and squeaked out a degree in journalism while spending my time writing complicated rock music, leading a band, and transcribing jazz solos. After graduating, I remained in Chapel Hill (a hard place to leave), touring extensively with a jammy rock band, playing local jazz gigs, and transcribing more jazz solos. In 1998, my twenty-something-college-town reverie was disrupted when my girlfriend could no longer endure Chapel Hill's intense gravitional pull and initiated a move to New York. Since then I have been playing jazz in NYC and all over the world with people like Harry Connick Jr., Kate McGarry, Luciana Souza, Peter Eldridge, MOSS (Kate, Luciana, Peter, Theo Bleckmann, Lauren Kinhan), Donny McCaslin, Gary Versace, Clarence Penn, Fred Hersch, Christian McBride, Reuben Rogers, Greg Hutchinson, Victor Lewis, Sean Smith, John Ellis, Otis Brown III, Steve Cardenas, Gretchen Parlato, Jo Lawry, and many others.
