Katia B is my artistic name. Many years ago my grandparents migrated from Russia to Brazil. I grew up in the Ipanema beach neighborhood during the late 60s and early 70s. My mother used to take part in bossa nova ‘roundups’ at bars and parties during the very birth of this music style. Later she sung in the choirs of female voices on Egberto Gismontis early recordings. Music was always an issue at home and I started to follow classes at an early age, giving in my passion for singing.

I also gave way to performing arts by studying dance and theatre and by taking part in a very famous group of young ‘avant-garde’ artists in Rio de Janeiro (at the beginning of the 80s). Among the very famous local artists who rose from this group was my long time close friend Bebel Gilberto (João Gilbertos daughter).

After taking part in several movies, plays, musicals and dancing projects, I concentrated my career on singing. In the mid 90s, when I started to look for some new partners to give a deeper focus on my musical concepts, I had the luck to find the late great producer Suba. Before his untimely death in 1999, I had the privilege to have him mixing my first album, 'Katia B' (2000). Suba also invited me to compose and sing on his successful album 'São Paulo Confessions'. Our partnership can be heard on the track called ‘Secret’. Later I participated on his tribute album 'Tributo', on the track ‘Are you Sleeping?’. Both albums, that received great reviews, were released by the Belgian record company Crammed Discs.

My second album, ‘Só Deixo Meu Coração na Mão de Quem Pode’ (2003), was released worldwide. In Brazil the album was released by MCD Records, in Japan by Rip Curl Recordings, in Germany by Peacelounge Recordings, in the UK by Tumi Music (as ‘Mais Uma/ One More Shot’) and in the US by Street Beat Records (as ‘My Brazilian Heart’). I worked with several producers. Some of them were new names in the Brazilian music scene. Others were well known, like Bid (electronic and lounge) and Marcos Suzano (the great Brazilian percussionist who travels the world spreading some serious Samba beats!). Some other great local musicians participated on the album too, like my husband João Barone (drummer for famous rock band Paralamas do Sucesso) and the great worldwide renowned musical genius and close friend, Egberto Gismonti. The success of the album led to various concert invitations in and outside Brazil; like in Mexico, Uruguay, France (Paris) and Germany (in Frankfurt and at the well known Popkomm Festival in Berlin (2006)).

Now it’s time for ‘Especial’, my third solo project.
